How to upgrade VirtualCenter Server to the latest version

Information:

Before starting the installation read the Release Notes for the latest version of VirtualCenter Server.  The Release Notes contains valuable information about common issues that may arise post installation.

 

1)      Download the most recent version of VirtualCenter from VMWare

2)      Unzip the downloaded file to a folder on the existing VirtualCenter Server

3)      Backup all existing Databases for VirtualCenter

a.       VirtualCenter Inventory Database

b.      Update Manager Database

4)      Run the Autorun.exe program to start the installation

a.       Welcome Screen

                                                               i.      Click Next

b.      Introduction Screen

                                                               i.      Click Next

c.       Component Selection

                                                               i.      By default existing installation options are already selected for upgrade.

                                                             ii.      Make any changes as needed and Click Next

d.      Deployment Options – Step 1

                                                               i.      Since this is an upgrade you should select User and existing database server

1.      If you are using an existing SQL 2005 Express installation locate the DSN in the ODBC Administrator applet and enter the DNS appropriate name

a.       Leave the username and password blank

2.      If you are using a full version of SQL 2000 or 2005 then enter the appropriate information.

3.      Click Next

                                                             ii.      Old Database version warning

1.      The follow warning will appear

2.      Click OK

                                                            iii.      Deployment Options – Step 2

1.      Check Use an existing License Server

2.      Verify port@FQDN of license server

a.       Or port@localhost

b.      Default port is 27000

3.      Select appropriate VirtualCenter Management Server Edition.

4.      Click Next

                                                           iv.      Deployment Options – Step 3

1.      Accept all default ports unless you changed them during the previous installation.

2.      Click Next

                                                             v.      VirtualCenter Server Authorization

1.      Enter the appropriate Admin userid and password

2.      Click Next

                                                           vi.      VMWare Update Manager Database Upgrade Confirmation

1.      Click Yes, I have taken a backup of my VMWare Update Manager database.

2.      Click Next

                                                          vii.      VMWare Converter Enterprise Deployment Options

1.      Accept default

2.      Click Next

                                                        viii.      Destination Folder

1.      It is recommended that the upgrade be done to the same location as the previous installation.  Verify the installation path is to the current location

2.      Click Next

                                                           ix.      Ready to Install

1.      Click Install

e.       Wait as the installation takes place

f.        VirtualCenter Database Upgrade Wizard appears

                                                               i.      Welcome Screen

1.      Click Next

                                                             ii.      Upgrade Information

1.      Accept Defaults

a.       You may want to discard performance information to speed the installation.

2.      Click Next

                                                            iii.      Ready to Complete

1.      Click Start

                                                           iv.      Wait as upgrade takes place

                                                             v.      Upgrade Status

1.      Upgrade Completed Successfully Message

2.      Click Finish

g.       Wait as the remaining portion of the upgrade take place

                                                               i.      Wizard Completed

1.      Click Finish

                                                             ii.      Restart Computer Message

1.      Click Yes to restart now

5)      Wait for the server to reboot

6)      Launch the new version of the VI Client on the server

a.       Install and Enable the Update Manager and Converter Plug-ins

7)      Have all VI Client users download the VI Client and upgrade

a.       The VI Client can be downloaded from via a Web Browser

                                                               i.      http://vc_server

b.      The VI Client is also provided in the Installation ZIP file in VPX folder

                                                               i.      Filename: VMWare-viclient.exe
