How VirtualCenter displays the DNS name on the Summary tab

Issue:

When viewing the Summary tab of a Guest OS in VirutalCenter the DNS Name is not properly filled in.

 

 

Cause:

VMWare Tools is not installed and/or the Guest OS is not properly configured for a DNS suffix for the operating system installed.

 

 

Solution:

First you must install VMWare tools for the OS.  After that the rest is operating system specific because VMWare tools looks in specific files to obtain the appropriate information.

 

Microsoft Windows

Configure the Primary DNS Suffix as shown in the screen shot below.  If you computer is joined to a domain then by default this is filled in correctly for you.

 

 

 

Novell Netware

It is currently unknown what settings VMware Tools is looking for on Novell Netware.

 

Other OS

Configure the TCP/IP settings correctly and include the proper DNS Domain Suffix.
