Issue:

After expanding the LUN used as a Virtual RDM (Raw device mapping), you are unable to view the added disk space inside the Virtual Machine.

Cause:

The mapping file must be updated to reflect the change in the LUN size being presented to the virtual machine.

Solution:

Use this procedure to properly extend the LUN, mapping file, and OS partition.

1)      On the storage array increase the size of the LUN

2)      On the ESX Host(s) rescan for changes to the LUNs

a.       Do this for every ESX host in the cluster / with access to this LUN.

b.      Sometimes a Refresh is needed to update vCenter after the Rescan All is completed.

3)      Verify the ESX host reports the new size of the LUN

a.       Review the size of the LUNs are reported by the various HBA Paths

4)      Power down the VM

a.       If this is part of an MSCS cluster power down all nodes of the cluster.

5)      On the VM delete the current mapping file

a.       Record the existing mapping file before deleting.

b.      Know the existing LUN ID the Storage Array is presenting to the sever

c.       Record the existing SCSI ID

d.      If this is part of an MSCS Cluster you only need to do this on one node of the cluster.

6)      If the VM is part of an MSCS Cluster

a.       Add new Hard disk

b.      Use an existing virtual disk

c.       Browse to path and mapping file

d.      Select the appropriate mapping file

e.       Select the appropriate SCSI ID

7)      If the VM is a standalone server

a.       Add new Hard disk

b.      Raw Device Mappings

c.       Select the appropriate LUN ID

d.      Store the mapping file as you previously had it stored.

e.       Select compatibility Mode.

f.        Select the appropriate SCSI ID

8)      Power on the VM(s)

9)      Log into the OS

10)  Extend the partition as you would normally.
