Issue:
One or more of the following errors occur while a backup is occurring on a Virtual Machine running Windows 2008 R2 on ESX/ESXi 4.1 Update 1 with VM Tools Update 1 installed.
Event ID: 57
Source: Ntfs
Description:
The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur.
Event ID: 137
Source: Ntfs
Description:
The default transaction resource manager on volume \\?\Volume{1234289e8-1234-1234-1234-123456ae003d} encountered a non-retryable error and could not start. The data contains the error code.
Event ID: 12289
Source: VSS
Description:
Volume Shadow Copy Service error: Unexpected error DeviceIoControl(\\?\fdc#generic_floppy_drive#6&12343940&0&0#{1234630d-1234-1234-1234-1234c91efb8b} - 00000000000004A0,0x00560000,0000000000000000, 0,0000000000353B50,4096,[0]). hr = 0x80070001, Incorrect function.
Cause:
There is a bug in the VMTools released with ESX/ESXi 4.1 Update 1 that causes this error.
Solution:
Do nothing, this error does not cause any issue with the integrity of the backup. This is a superficial error and VMware is working to resolve it.
Creating a quiesced snapshot in a Window 2008 R2 virtual machine generates Event IDs 57, 137, or 12289
Workarounds:
Method 1
In most cases when you uninstall VMTools installed with Update 1 and install VMTools pre-update 1 the errors are not reported.
Method 2
In some cases changing the disk.enableUUID value to FALSE as described in the following article resolves the issue.
Cannot take a quiesced snapshot of Windows 2008 R2 virtual machine running vCenter Server 4.1
Method 3
Upgrade to the latest version of VMTools if possible. This may be Update 2 or Update 3 or later. It all depends on if VMWare actually fixes the issue as they indicate they will.
